GST

Understand registration, returns, input tax credit, exports, notices and state-specific eligibility.

G01How do I know whether my business needs GST registration?

Check your state, annual aggregate turnover, goods/services supplied, customers, selling channels and any compulsory-registration rule or exemption. Turnover alone is not always sufficient. A business supplying only exempt items can have a different position from a taxable supplier.

G02Is the GST registration threshold the same throughout Northeast India?

No. Do not apply one “Northeast threshold” to every state. Service-provider thresholds differ, including lower thresholds in Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. Goods-only businesses need a separate state-specific assessment, along with the applicable exceptions.

All 12 states
G03Is the GST threshold based on turnover or profit?

Registration thresholds generally use aggregate turnover, not net profit. A business with high sales and low profit may still need registration. The applicable limit depends on the state, supply category and available exemptions.

All 12 states
G04Do I calculate GST turnover separately for each business name?

Aggregate turnover generally combines relevant supplies across India under the same PAN. Operating two proprietorship brands does not automatically give the owner two independent turnover limits. Exempt supplies and exports can also affect the calculation.

G05Do I need GST registration just because my service client is in another state?

Not necessarily. Eligible small interstate service suppliers can benefit from a registration exemption subject to the relevant conditions. Assess turnover, service type and other registration triggers before assuming that one out-of-state client makes registration compulsory.

All 12 states
G06Are interstate sales of goods treated the same as interstate services?

No. Interstate taxable goods supplies can create registration obligations that differ from those for small service suppliers. Specific exemptions also exist. Check the product, transaction and sales channel before relying on a general turnover exemption.

G07Must every Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho seller obtain a GSTIN?

Not in every case. A conditional route exists for certain unregistered suppliers of goods through e-commerce operators. Eligibility depends on factors such as turnover, intra-state supply, enrolment and other restrictions. The platform’s onboarding rules must also be checked.

G08Can a freelancer register for GST at a home address?

A home address may be accepted when it is genuinely used for the business and the prescribed occupancy evidence is available. The checklist differs for owned, rented and consent-based premises. Check property-use restrictions separately.

All 12 states
G09Is a landlord NOC always required for GST registration?

The documents depend on the occupancy arrangement and current registration instructions. Do not assume every rented-premises case needs the same NOC package. A valid tenancy document and appropriate ownership evidence may satisfy the relevant route, with additional records required in specified circumstances.

All 12 states
G10Can I use my parents’ property for GST registration without paying rent?

A genuine consent-based arrangement may be possible. It normally requires the prescribed consent and supporting identity/ownership evidence. The business address must be truthful and usable; a relative’s ownership alone is not a substitute for the required documentation.

All 12 states
G11Can I buy a virtual-office address for GST registration?

Assess the arrangement before purchasing it. A GST registration needs a valid place of business and acceptable evidence, and verification may be required. A provider’s promise of approval does not establish that the address is suitable for your business.

All 12 states
G12What documents are usually needed for GST registration?

The usual records cover PAN, business constitution, relevant persons and authorisation, photographs where required, and the place of business. Requirements vary between a proprietor, partnership, LLP and company. Overseas or specialised applicants have different checklists.

G13Do I need to provide bank details before receiving my GSTIN?

Bank details are generally handled through the applicable post-registration process. Rule 10A requires covered taxpayers to furnish them within 30 days of registration or before filing GSTR-1/IFF, whichever is earlier. Exceptions and the current portal requirements must be checked.

G14Is there a government fee for normal GST registration?

The normal GST registration application does not carry a government registration fee. A consultant may charge for assessing eligibility, preparing documents and handling the application. The quotation should clearly identify the professional service and any genuinely applicable additional work.

All 12 states
G15Can GST registration be completed without any physical verification?

Some applications proceed through electronic checks, while others require biometric authentication, document verification or physical verification. The applicable route depends on current rules and the application. No consultant should guarantee that every applicant can avoid verification.

All 12 states
G16What should I do if my GST application receives a clarification notice?

Read the exact issue and response deadline. Compare the submitted information with the supporting documents and prepare a focused reply. Repeatedly filing fresh applications without resolving the underlying issue can create further confusion.

All 12 states
G17Can I voluntarily register for GST before reaching the threshold?

Yes, where the normal registration route permits it. However, registration brings invoicing, record-keeping and return obligations. Consider customer requirements, input tax credit and ongoing compliance costs before registering solely because it appears beneficial.

G18Do I need to file GST returns when there are no sales?

A registered taxpayer can still have return obligations during a period without sales. A nil return is appropriate only when its conditions are met; purchases, reverse-charge liability or input-tax-credit adjustments can affect that assessment. No sales does not automatically mean no filing.

G19What is the QRMP scheme?

QRMP allows eligible taxpayers to file specified returns quarterly while meeting the applicable monthly tax-payment requirements. Eligibility and suitability depend on the current scheme rules. Quarterly filing should not be confused with having no monthly compliance work.

G20What is the difference between GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B?

GSTR-1 reports outward-supply details. GSTR-3B summarises relevant liabilities, input tax credit and tax payment. The figures should be reconciled with each other and with the books; submitting one does not automatically complete the other obligation.

All 12 states
G21Can I claim every purchase appearing in GSTR-2B as input tax credit?

No. Appearance in GSTR-2B does not by itself establish complete eligibility. Check the purchase’s business purpose, applicable restrictions, supporting invoice, receipt and other statutory conditions. Reversals or timing issues may also apply.

All 12 states
G22What if a supplier’s invoice is missing or incorrect in my GST records?

Compare the invoice, GSTIN, period and supplier reporting. Ask the supplier to correct a genuine error and review the applicable credit rules before claiming it. Keep a reconciliation record rather than forcing the books and portal figures to match without explanation.

G23Does receiving money from an overseas client automatically make my service an export?

No. Export-of-services treatment depends on conditions including the supplier, recipient, place of supply and payment arrangements. A foreign payment or foreign currency alone is insufficient. Review the contract and actual service before applying zero-rated treatment.

G24What is an LUT, and what information is needed?

An eligible registered exporter can use a Letter of Undertaking for qualifying supplies without payment of integrated tax under the applicable procedure. Information includes GSTIN, financial year, authorised signatory and the required witness details. The LUT does not remove return or export-compliance obligations.

All 12 states
G25If my export service is zero-rated under GST, is the income tax-free?

No. GST and income tax are separate systems. A qualifying zero-rated supply can still produce taxable business or professional income. Maintain the contract, invoices, payment evidence and expense records for both assessments.

All 12 states
G26Do I need a GST registration in every state where I have customers?

Not merely because customers live there. Registration depends on where the business makes supplies from and other applicable rules. A new office, warehouse, branch or fulfilment arrangement can change the position and should be assessed before operations begin.

All 12 states
G27Can I change my business address or name in an existing GST registration?

Many changes can be handled through the appropriate amendment route. Core and non-core changes have different procedures. A change involving PAN can require a fresh registration, so check the underlying legal change before applying.

All 12 states
G28Can I stop filing returns once I stop using my GST number?

Simply stopping business or invoices does not cancel the registration. Review cancellation eligibility, outstanding returns, tax/credit adjustments and any final-return obligation. Keep the cancellation order and closure records.

All 12 states
G29Are GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C the same?

No. GSTR-9 is the annual return, while GSTR-9C is the applicable reconciliation statement. Their requirements depend on the financial year, turnover, taxpayer category and relevant exemptions. Do not assume that every registered business must file both.

All 12 states
G30What should I send for help with a GST notice?

Provide the complete notice, date of service, deadline, GSTIN, period and relevant returns or transaction records through the agreed private channel. State whether any reply has already been filed. Sending an enquiry does not extend the deadline or confirm acceptance of representation. **7. Fresh FAQ content: income tax**
